REFEREES & NSOs

Roller derby can’t be played without officials. To play our home games we need a crew of referees and non-skating officials (NSOs), and you can be part of it. No experience needed.

Referees

Referees skate on the track during the game. They enforce the rules and whistle penalties. A game typically has 5 to 7 referees: some follow the jammers, others the packs. Never skated? Come to an open training: we’ll teach you to skate and how the game works.

NSOs (non-skating officials)

NSOs work off skates, along the track and at the scoreboard. They keep the game running: timing the jams, keeping track of penalties and penalty box time, keeping score and tracking line-ups. You don’t have to skate at all.

Do I need experience?

No. You don’t need any prior skills or knowledge of roller derby. We’ll teach you the rules and the job, and you learn alongside our skaters. If you want to take it further, the WFTDA and the MRDA both offer certification for referees and NSOs.

Everyone aged 16 or older is welcome, whatever your gender. Roller derby is very LGBTQIA+ friendly.
